Our history

Airconditioning Superstore began in Johannesburg in 2004 as a focused air-conditioning supplier serving homes and businesses that needed straight answers, fair pricing and proper fitment. Since then the business has grown with the market, adding inverter, solar and heat pump solutions while keeping the same practical approach.

Our history

2004: the first years in Johannesburg North

Airconditioning Superstore started trading in 2004 from Johannesburg North, with a clear purpose: help local households and small businesses source the right air-conditioning equipment and get it fitted properly the first time. In those early years the work was mostly split systems, replacement units and call-outs for homes in Johannesburg, Sandton and Randburg where people wanted cooler rooms without the confusion that often comes with product choice and installation.

The original team built the business on direct service, on-site advice and honest follow-through. From the beginning, the focus was not just on selling equipment. It was on matching the unit to the room size, the power supply and the way the building was used. That mattered in Gauteng, where some homes have older wiring, some offices run long hours, and many clients need cooling that can cope with summer heat and load-shedding interruptions.

By keeping the offering practical from day one, the business earned repeat work from families, landlords, small offices and property managers. It was a simple idea, but it held up well: supply the right equipment, install it correctly, and remain available when service is needed later on.

2007 to 2010: moving from supply only to full fitment

As demand grew, the business expanded beyond supply into full aircon supply-and-fit projects. That shift changed the way many customers used the company. Instead of buying equipment from one place and looking for an installer somewhere else, they could now deal with one team from quotation through to commissioning. It cut down mistakes, delays and the usual back-and-forth over pipe runs, drain points and electrical requirements.

During this period the company also broadened its work across the East Rand, West Rand and Midrand, where new homes, offices and light commercial premises needed reliable cooling. Installation jobs became more technical, with more attention on cable routes, condenser positioning, condensate drainage and access for future maintenance. In office buildings, the team often had to work around trading hours, tenant rules and body corporate limits, which is part of the job when you work in the Gauteng market.

  • Supply and fit for single rooms, offices and small commercial spaces
  • Replacement of older, inefficient units
  • Relocation of air-conditioners during renovations or office moves
  • Service and repair work to keep older systems going longer

Those years also shaped the way the business quoted work. Customers needed clear pricing, proper site checks and realistic lead times. That habit stayed with the company and still guides how jobs are handled today.

2010 to 2014: growing the technical team and service range

As the customer base widened, so did the technical side of the business. More homes were upgrading from basic cooling to inverter systems, especially where electricity use had become a bigger concern. Offices were also asking for quieter units and better control over operating costs. Airconditioning Superstore responded by strengthening its service department and adding more specialised support for repairs, maintenance and planned servicing.

This was also the period when the team became more structured. Thabo Mokoena continued to lead the business as Managing Director, with support from Naledi Khumalo in sales, Pieter van Rensburg overseeing installations, Ayesha Patel coordinating service work, Sibusiso Dlamini handling technical support and Lerato Molefe focusing on heat pump projects. Having named roles and clear responsibilities made a real difference when several jobs were running at the same time across Johannesburg North and the wider Gauteng area.

Clients began to recognise the business for steady workmanship rather than quick promises. For many properties, especially in suburban areas and office parks, the main need was not a new system every time. It was sensible maintenance, prompt repairs and advice that matched the building and the budget. That is still the kind of work the company prefers.

2014 to 2019: adding heating, solar aircon and water generation

By the middle of the 2010s, customer needs were changing. Energy use was under more scrutiny, summers were hotter, and winter heating requests were becoming more common. Airconditioning Superstore began expanding its offering to include heating solutions, heat pump installation and service, solar aircons and atmospheric water generators. That gave clients more than one path to manage comfort and utility costs across the year.

For many Gauteng customers, these additions made practical sense. Heat pumps suited homes and small commercial properties that wanted efficient hot water heating. Solar aircons helped in properties where clients wanted to reduce grid dependence during peak times or load-shedding. Atmospheric water generators attracted interest from sites that wanted an alternate water source for specific use cases. Each product needed proper assessment, and not every property was a fit, which is why site surveys became an important part of the service.

  • Heat pump installation and ongoing service
  • Solar airconditioning for selected homes and offices
  • Atmospheric water generator installation
  • Commercial site surveys for bigger projects and phased rollouts

From 2014 through 2019, the business kept building its name across Johannesburg North, Sandton, Randburg and Midrand. The work became broader, but the same principle applied: choose equipment carefully, install it neatly, and explain what the customer should expect after handover.

2020 onward: stronger support through changing power conditions

The 2020s brought new pressure on homes and businesses in South Africa. Load-shedding affected office schedules, family routines and store operations, while many buildings had to look again at how cooling and hot water systems used power. Airconditioning Superstore adapted by placing more emphasis on inverter systems, solar-supported cooling and efficient heat pump work. Customers needed equipment that could handle real-world conditions, not just catalogue specifications.

Service work also became more important. With more people using air-conditioning for longer periods and trying to stretch the life of existing units, servicing and repair requests increased. The company kept supporting aircon replacements, relocations, maintenance plans and fault finding, especially where older systems were being moved, upgraded or repaired rather than replaced outright. In coastal humidity or dusty inland conditions, regular maintenance can prevent a lot of trouble later on, so the team keeps that message practical and direct.

Today the business continues from the same Johannesburg base with the same family of services that grew over two decades. It still serves homes, offices and light commercial clients across Johannesburg North, Sandton, Randburg, Midrand, the East Rand and the West Rand. The difference is that the range is wider now, with stronger technical support and more options for customers who want better control over comfort and running costs.

The people behind the work

Businesses last when the people in them know their jobs and keep showing up for customers. That has been true at Airconditioning Superstore from the beginning. The team structure has helped the business stay organised as it moved from a smaller aircon supplier into a broader comfort solutions provider.

Thabo Mokoena has guided the company as Managing Director since the early years, keeping the business anchored to practical service and steady growth. Naledi Khumalo manages sales with a focus on suitable product choices, while Pieter van Rensburg oversees installation standards and site execution. Ayesha Patel keeps service bookings moving, Sibusiso Dlamini handles technical support and fault diagnosis, and Lerato Molefe brings specialist knowledge to heat pump installations and servicing.

That combination matters because no two sites are the same. A townhouse in Sandton, a retail unit in Randburg and a small office in Midrand all need different treatment. The team has built its reputation by treating those differences seriously and by keeping communication clear from quote to completion.

What has stayed the same since 2004

Even though the product range has grown, the business has kept the same core habits since 2004. Customers still want clear guidance, proper installation and service that does not disappear after the invoice is paid. Airconditioning Superstore has stayed close to that standard for more than twenty years.

The history of the company is really a history of steady adaptation. The market moved from basic cooling to inverter systems, then to solar options, heating and water generation. Through all of that, the business kept serving Johannesburg and Gauteng with the same simple idea: give people equipment that suits the property and support it properly afterwards. That approach has carried the company from its early years into the present day, and it is what continues to guide the work now.
