Lounge Aircons

A lounge aircon needs to suit the room, the way the family uses it, and the heat from doors, windows and connected spaces. We supply and fit split, inverter and solar aircons for lounges, TV rooms and open-plan living areas across Johannesburg and Gauteng.

Lounge Aircons

Why lounge cooling needs a different approach

A family lounge is not the same as a bedroom. People sit longer, doors open more often, the television adds a bit of heat, and an open-plan layout can pull cool air into a kitchen or passage. In Johannesburg North and Sandton, many lounges get strong afternoon sun through large windows, while in Randburg and the East Rand we often see older homes with added aluminium doors and high ceilings that make sizing tricky.

The right unit should cool the room without blasting cold air straight onto the couch. It must also cope with winter evenings, because a good lounge system should give you warm air when the temperature drops. With the right setup, you get steady comfort for movie nights, visitors, and everyday use without the room feeling noisy or draughty.

We usually start by looking at room size in square metres, ceiling height, window size, and whether the lounge opens to a dining area or kitchen. That gives a better result than guessing by the number of people in the house. A 20 m2 enclosed lounge and a 40 m2 open-plan living area need very different equipment, even if the walls look similar.

Typical aircon options for lounges and living rooms

Most lounge installations fall into a few common sizes and unit types. For smaller lounges, a 9 000 BTU or 12 000 BTU split unit may be enough. For medium family rooms, 18 000 BTU is often the better starting point. Larger open-plan areas may need 24 000 BTU or more, especially if there is afternoon sun, high ceilings, or a double-volume opening.

  • Split aircons suit standard lounges where you want good cooling and heating at a practical price.
  • Inverter units are a strong choice for rooms used daily because they maintain temperature well and usually draw less power over time.
  • Solar-ready aircons help where load-shedding, high electricity use, or daytime running is a concern.
  • Heat pump support can be useful when the same living area also needs efficient hot water planning.

If you are replacing an old unit, we also check the pipe route and electrical supply. A straight replacement is sometimes simple, but other times the indoor position or drain route must change so the lounge does not end up with dripping water or a noisy installation.

Layout advice for comfortable living areas

The best lounge installations are planned around furniture, sunlight and airflow. The indoor unit should not blow directly onto the main seating area if it can be avoided. In a room with a corner couch, wall-mounted TV and sliding doors, the unit is often better placed higher on a side wall so air can move across the room and back again. That gives more even comfort.

We also look at where the outdoor unit can sit without causing noise problems for neighbours or reflecting heat into a small courtyard. In some Johannesburg suburbs, body corporate or municipal rules may affect where equipment can go, especially in apartment blocks and sectional title homes. It is better to confirm that before drilling any holes.

For open-plan spaces, zoning matters. Sometimes one unit is enough if the room is not too wide, but in bigger living areas two smaller units can work better than one oversized machine. That way you avoid short cycling, uneven temperatures and that annoying on-off feeling when the room is half cool and half warm.

  • Keep the indoor unit away from direct sunlight where possible.
  • Allow clear space around curtains, shelves and curtain rails.
  • Check the route for drainage so condensate leaves cleanly.
  • Make sure there is a proper isolator and safe electrical connection.

Common mistakes homeowners make

A lot of lounge problems come from poor sizing. People sometimes choose a unit because it is on special, then find it struggles on hot summer afternoons. Others buy too large a unit, which cools the room fast but leaves it cold, humid or uneven. Both options can waste money and make the space less comfortable.

Another common mistake is ignoring the room use pattern. A lounge used only in the evening may need different planning from one used all day for remote work, television and entertaining. If the room opens into the kitchen, the aircon will work harder than expected. We see this often in Midrand and the West Rand where modern homes have wide living zones and high glass areas.

Do not forget maintenance. A dusty filter, blocked drain pipe, or loose outdoor mounting can cause poor performance and extra repairs. Coastal humidity is not the main issue in Johannesburg, but dust and summer pollen still build up fast. A serviced unit keeps air flow stronger and helps the system last longer.

Budget ranges for lounge aircons in Rand

Budget depends on unit size, inverter or non-inverter type, pipe length, wall thickness and whether the wiring must be upgraded. As a working guide, smaller lounge supply-and-fit jobs often start around R9 500 to R13 500. Medium family lounge installations are commonly in the R13 500 to R21 000 range. Larger open-plan living areas, premium inverter systems or trickier installs can sit from R21 000 to R35 000 and above.

Replacements may cost less if the old pipe run and electrical point can be reused. Relocations can cost more if the indoor unit has to move to a new wall or the drain line needs extending. If you want a solar aircon setup or a system that is better suited to daytime use during load-shedding, the equipment cost is usually higher, but the running cost may make more sense over time.

We are always upfront about what is included. That normally means site check, supply, standard installation materials, pipe work within the normal range, drainage setup and commissioning. If there are extras like a longer pipe run, new cabling or core drilling through thick brick, we quote that clearly before the work starts. No one likes a surprise on the final bill, not when the lounge still needs curtains and paint.

Supply, fit, repairs and servicing in Johannesburg and Gauteng

Airconditioning Superstore has worked from Johannesburg North since 2004, with support for homes and offices across Sandton, Randburg, Midrand, the East Rand and the West Rand. Our team handles lounge aircon supply and fit, replacements, relocations, servicing and repairs, plus maintenance plans for homes that use the system often.

For a new lounge installation, our process is practical: measure the room, check the layout, recommend the right size, and plan the cleanest pipe and drain route. For service work, we inspect filters, gas pressures, electrical connections and drainage. If a lounge unit is cooling poorly or making an odd noise, it is often something small that can be sorted before it becomes a bigger repair.

  • Supply and fit for family lounges, TV rooms and open-plan living areas
  • Aircon replacements and relocations
  • Repairs and servicing for older systems
  • Maintenance plans for regular care
  • Commercial site surveys for offices and mixed-use spaces

Whether you need a neat wall-mounted unit for a compact lounge or a stronger system for a bigger living area, we will advise on the practical option. You get straight answers, proper sizing and an installation that suits the room, not just the brochure.

What clients say

Questions we get asked

What size aircon do I need for a lounge?

Small lounges often need 9 000 BTU to 12 000 BTU, medium lounges commonly need 18 000 BTU, and larger open-plan rooms may need 24 000 BTU or more. Room size, ceiling height, sun and layout all matter.

Can one aircon cool an open-plan living area?

Yes, if the room size and layout suit it. For very wide or high spaces, two smaller units may work better than one oversized unit, especially where doors and kitchen heat affect airflow.

Do you install lounge aircons in Johannesburg and Gauteng?

Yes. We supply and fit lounge aircons across Johannesburg North, Sandton, Randburg, Midrand, the East Rand and the West Rand, with servicing, repairs and replacements available too.
